Andoni San Diego

Since Dogan Ronda left Nivaton, the Nivans practiced wielding the swords. A group of them practiced with spears, while another group practiced with arrows. It was as though everybody is actually preparing for battle.

Under the blanket of the night sky, I watched as my wife walked towards me. After we were married and she gave birth to Pyper, she had gained some pounds which she was not able to get rid of regardless if she always bore hard labor. Her eyes were the exact copies of my daughter’s. And seeing my wife at this late hour reminded me of how much I missed Pyper.

“Have you received any news from Dogan?” Laren asked.

I avoided her eyes. It’s been over a month already and Dogan has not sent me word. I didn’t want to doubt his credibility.

“News will come to me when it is needed,” I answered.

She stood in front of me as though she wanted to confront me and yet, she remained quiet.

“Your daughter is safe. Trust me on that,” I said, although I really wasn’t certain. But Dogan took with him another dozen Nivans to search for Pyper. How could he miss her?

Laren’s jaw firmed. “I want her back here. She’s twelve for the love of gods! How can she even protect herself?”

I understand her. I worried about my daughter, too, but responsibility to the community far outweighs the responsibility to one’s own family.

“Rest easy. Dogan will find her and keep her safe,” I said, trying to sound reassuring.

Her face twisted. “She’s our only child, Andoni. If anything happens to her … I don’t think I can forgive myself.”

With that I stood up and put an arm around her waist. I pulled her close to me and whispered against her ear, “I promise you, I will die first before any harm befalls upon her.”

“But how could you know? She’s not around for us to protect.”

“Didn’t you remember how she kept on missing for days ever since she learned how to swing using the vines?” I said, remembering my fondest memories of my daughter. “How she called herself monkey because she said she can out-swing them?”

Laren laughed softly.

“And then she would return to us, apologize and finish her pairs of sandals. It was a neat punishment. She hated that task and because of that, her exploits became less. Still, she’s a free spirited girl and we cannot break her wings. You know you won’t even if you can.”

Laren pressed her cheek against my chest. “I miss our daughter.”

“I miss her, too. But all we can do now is wait.” My gut tightened. “I cannot look for her myself and leave the town. You know the situation here now. If I so much as set foot outside the outskirts of the mountains, Salvatore may push for the Nivans to oust me as the Head Hunter.”

“He’s not going to do that,” she said.

“Why not?” I asked. “He never favoured me in the past. He still hates me now.”

“He is my uncle. He cannot be so hard on you.
